CU Systemwide AI Committee launches
In keeping with new administrative policy which took effect on Aug. 24, the CU Systemwide AI committee is expected to hold its first meeting in October.
AI committees are already working across all four campuses and the system office on policies and process recommendations including questions around what tools and tool functionality each environment will approve, how processes for AI policy will work, responsible use of tools in the classroom should faculty include its use in their curriculum, and ethical use of the tool in university operations.
Those efforts gained a common framework this fall with the adoption of Administrative Policy Statement 6012, Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence. This administrative policy requires each campus chancellor to appoint an AI committee with shared-governance representation. It also directs faculty governance bodies to develop processes for addressing academic and instructional uses of AI and calls for the president to appoint a systemwide AI committee.
Under APS 6012, campus committees are charged with helping coordinate responsible AI use and innovation as well as developing campus-specific policies and practices. Faculty governance retains its traditional role in academic matters, including pedagogy, curriculum and research.
In its first meeting, the Systemwide AI Committee is expected to review and synthesize responses from campus and system administration groups concerning current use of AI and CU’s exisiting contract with OpenAI. The committee will use that input to develop recommendations and provide feedback to the president and chancellors.
