One of the most influential artists of the 20th century, Yvonne Rainer is a key figure of American avant-garde dance and feminist filmmaking. Rainer’s choreographic work of the 1960s broke from the traditions of ballet and modern dance by rejecting spectacle, virtuosity, and narrative drama. Championing minimalist compositional systems, pedestrian action, and task-based activities, Rainer created performances that are structurally complex yet comprised of recognizable everyday movement.

At UCCS, Yvonne Rainer: Early Dances, 1963-1974 will include studio showings of three iconic dance works from Rainer's early career--We Shall Run (1963), Trio A (1966), and Chair Pillow (1969)--alongside screenings of Rainer's first two feature-length dance-films--Lives of Performers: A Melodrama (1972) and Film About a Woman Who... (1974). All events are free and open to the public.
